Negros Farmers and Planters Insulted by Painting of Pope with Movie Stars

BACOLOD, Philippines - Not too long after an online news item was posted on the internet about a painting created with the image of Pope Francis and several Philippine movie stars and a politician, farmers and planters from the sugar producing island of Negros voiced out how inappropriate this work of art was.

In the 29”x24” oil on canvas painting created by visual artist Dante Hipolito, Pope Francis is seen with Marian Rivera, Kris Aquino, Coco Martin, Gary Valenciano, and Sen. Grace Poe.

One planter reacted by saying, "This is a big insult to us who find our livelihood in agriculture and farming.  These people with Pope Francis do not represent us at all."

Another said, "Kris Aquino as a farmer? Linteks! You gotta be kidding me!".

From the side of the farmers themselves, "Wala ini sya ya nakahibalo sang amon nga matuod nga kahimtangan" (The artist does not know what our real plight is), "wala pulos ina nga painting"(the painting is a piece of rubbish).

Sadly, the painting may be a secret satire which points to the nation being a strange mix of showbiz, politics, religion, and of course, business.

Negros Island. The SWEET Spot of the Philippines.
