Looking for wholesome entertainment for the family this weekend? You should head out to Solaire Theatre and watch Cookin' Nanta, a musical like no other.
The musical has a simple back story of three cooks attempting to finish preparing a wedding banquet within a strict time limit while the manager installs his incompetent nephew among the kitchen staff. The show involves acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean samul nori music, which in this case is performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives.
The Boomin’ and Cookin’ started in October of 1997 where a frying pan, a water bottle, a pot, a chopping board and even a knife were used as musical instruments. The music is based on Korean Somulnori rhythms of Jajinmori, Utdari, Puneori, etc. Is played in combination with five distinctive characters that results in Boomin’ and Cookin’ beat explosions. NANTA!
The performances are done using sounds and movements, thus language barriers are overcome. That the rhythms can be felt inside one’s chest and the visuals on the stage combines into something unique. That it is an intermingling of traditional and modern music. The fusion between what is felt and what is seen is the core of NANTA. That it is based on a storyline of what happens in the kitchen before an unexpected banquet adds the sense of urgency that is why the sounds and actions are frenetic.
