The Music Teacher.
Mrs. Sylvia Corteza, fondly known to her students as Tita Bebing, was
an icon when it came to the world of music in Negros. Oh, our short
attention span these days could not take in the fullness of Tita
Bebing's musical career and artistry, much less her persona. Her
students in piano and the organ span generations of Negrenses. I would
not even be surprised if some millennials today still caught the tail end
of Tita Bebing's teaching. This is remarkable considering that Tita
Bebing was teaching even as soon as liberation time set in.
As one of her students way back in 1980, I would ask her, "Tita, tani hatagan mo ko pieza nga jazz". I think she purposedly let those words pass by so as to force me to learn the rudiments of how music is structured, before breaking them up in the way of jazz.
At a time when I was hoping to tinkle with keys a la Dave Grusin, Tita Bebing wanted me to master "You'll Never Walk Alone" by Rodgers and Hammerstein from the 1945 musical, "Carousel".
Many years passed by and I had the chance to see her again in the early 1990s. I told her that I had just finished my studies in England and while I was there, I immersed myself with classical music.
Sabat ni Tita Bebing, with her signature croaky voice, "Good! Now you know what real music is all about!"
That being said, I am sure that a multitude of Negrenses have learned what good music is all about through Tita Bebing.
Happy Teachers' Day, Tita Bebing. What music you must be playing with the angels!
